I’m concerned that I won’t get enough protein, vitamins, calcium, etc when I stop eating meat, eggs or dairy.

When eating a colorful variety of whole food plant-based foods, you naturally receive the protein and nutrients your body needs. It all works harmoniously in your system. Sometimes minimal supplementing is necessary, but other than Vitamin B12 and Vitamin D which most people need, you are likely fine with a healthy diet. I’m concerned I’ll eat too many carbs (and gain weight) if I eat plant-based.

There’s a big difference between eating simple carbohydrates (chips, white bread, white flour, white rice) and whole food complex carbohydrates (whole grains, brown rice, quinoa, legumes) which supply nutrients and fuel without spiking blood sugar. When consumed as part of a whole food plant-based lifestyle, you are eating the perfect carbohydrates for your health. By removing all processed foods, white flours and grains, oils, sugars, meats, dairy and eggs, your body is maximizing nutrition and health. Many vegan products in the supermarket are more expensive than their meat counterparts. How can I afford to do this?

Sadly, the meat and dairy industries are heavily subsidized unlike the plant-based counterparts. Eating processed, prepared foods from the market or restaurants are only advised on a limited basis. It can get expensive and it’s not the best for your health either. Learning to cook and prepare healthy plant-based foods is the most affordable option and the best for your health too (which will be more cost effective in the long run).

I’m concerned that eating plant-based is too much of a commitment.

Eating plant-based is so much easier than you realize. There are many more foods and ingredients available in the stores, and creative chefs are constantly creating new recipes. It’s a commitment but in a good way. It’s a commitment to your health, to your values and to our precious earth. Once you start eating plant-based, you can’t imagine the way it used to be. It’s not just easy, it’s just your new normal.

I’ve never used many of the ingredients in plant-based recipes. I feel intimidated to try cooking with them.
