I’m concerned that I won’t get enough protein, vitamins, calcium, etc when I stop eating meat, eggs or dairy.
When eating a colorful variety of whole food plant-based foods, including legumes, greens, nuts, seeds, fruits, vegetables and whole grains, you naturally receive the protein and nutrients your body needs. It all works harmoniously in your system. Sometimes minimal supplementing is necessary, but other than Vitamin B12 and Vitamin D which most people need, you are likely fine with a healthy diet. You can always consult with a Registered Dietician or health professional knowledgeable about plant-based diets to be sure. To learn more, check out our blog and sign up for coaching or a cooking class, where you will receive more detailed information.
I’m concerned I’ll eat too many carbs (and gain weight) if I eat plant-based.
There’s a big difference between eating simple carbohydrates (chips, white bread, white flour, white rice) and whole food complex carbohydrates (whole grains, brown rice, quinoa, legumes) which supply nutrients, fiber and fuel without spiking blood sugar. When consumed as part of a whole food plant-based lifestyle, you are eating the perfect carbohydrates for your health. (Note: there is a variety of research that suggests slightly different foods for health. We will be sharing various philosophies in our blogs and newsletters.)

My friends think I’m extreme for choosing to eat plant-based and I don’t know how to speak with them.
Kudos for you for standing up for what you believe is right for you. Most naysayers are afraid that they will have to make changes in their lives, and they are not yet ready. Melanie Joy’s books are a great resource on this topic. For more tips and support, contact me for coaching or join one of our cooking classes.
I’m already vegan and I want to eat more whole foods but I don’t know how.
When Diane first went vegan she wasn’t eating whole foods either. Learning how to cook plant-based meals with whole food options is a game changer. Cooking is not the only way to eat a healthy whole food plant-based diet, but you have the most control over your ingredients when you do. For help whether you cook or not, reach out for coaching or join a cooking class for support.
Many vegan products in the supermarket are more expensive than their meat counterparts. How can I afford to do this?
Sadly, the meat and dairy industries are heavily subsidized unlike their plant-based counterparts. Plant-based substitutes can be expensive. Yet, they are a great way to avoid animal products, especially if eating plant-based is new to you. And they are better for the planet than animal agriculture. For optimal health, eating processed, prepared foods from the market or restaurants are only advised on a limited basis. Learning to cook and prepare healthy plant-based foods is the most affordable option and the best for your health too (which will be more cost-effective in the long run).
To learn how to cook affordable plant-based, join a cooking class. We offer you support before, during and after the class to make your plant-based journey easy and affordable.
I’m concerned that eating plant-based is too much of a commitment.
Anything new seems challenging and shifting to a plant-based lifestyle is no different. Yet, eating plant-based is so much easier than you might realize. There are many more foods and ingredients available in the stores than ever before, and creative chefs are constantly creating new recipes and dishes. It’s a commitment but in a good way. It’s a commitment to your health, to your values and to our precious earth. Once you start eating plant-based, you can’t imagine the way it used to be. It not only becomes easy, it’s just your new normal.

I’ve never used many of the ingredients in plant-based recipes. I feel intimidated to try cooking with them.
Diane remembers that exact feeling when she looked at plant-based recipes for the first time. It’s not as scary as it looks (though it does look like a foreign language!). The best way to get comfortable with this new way of cooking is to take a cooking class which will accelerate your confidence.

I’m concerned don’t have the right kitchen gadgets/tools to cook anything new.
Many recipes can easily be created using only the most basic tools. Most plant-based cooks have a high-speed blender and/or a food processor. While it’s nice to have more elaborate gadgets, it’s not always necessary.
